Rasheed, Leave the Predictions to the Experts

“We’re gonna win the game, I guarantee it.”

Do you recognize that quote? If you don’t, you should. This is probably the greatest prediction ever made by a player, in a time when player predictions actually meant something. Who is the player, you ask? None other than Joe Namath, predicting the outcome of Super Bowl III. The New York Jets were facing off against the Baltimore Colts and were 10-point underdogs. The brash young QB would follow through on his prediction, winning 1969’s big game 16-7. His boldness was innovative and would be copied time and again throughout sports history by some of the game’s greatest athletes. Recently, however, this trend has gotten a little out of hand.

“I know we goin’ win. I know we goin’ bust they ass. Tomorrow night is the last game here in this building this year. Y’all can quote me, put it back page, front page, whatever.”

Now I know most of you know who this is. It’s Detroit’s Rasheed Wallace giving his usual playoff prediction. This prediction came after a Game Three loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Lebron James. Rasheed was pretty much explaining, in his own crazy language, that the Pistons would defeat the Cavs in Game Four and wrap up the series back home in Game Five. Wallace’s predictions have become so common that writers have coined the phrase ‘guaransheed’ to explain his constant predictions. This is Wallace’s fourth such prediction and there is one problem. The Pistons lost Game Four. This forces me to bring forth the ultimate question; do player predictions mean anything anymore?

I have thought long and hard about this topic and came up with a checklist of sorts to see if this ‘guaransheed’ actually constitutes a meaningful prediction.

First off, if you are trying to be bold and make a prediction, you or your team must be the underdog in the contest.

Nope. Sorry Rasheed, but your team is the heavy favorite to win the NBA Championship. This in no way constitutes the Detroit Pistons as the underdog against the fourth seed Cleveland Cavaliers. No one on this Pistons team should be making any guarantees, unless they find themselves down in a playoff series, and that is very unlikely to happen now.

Second, what does a guarantee mean if the game that is being predicted is not the championship? My answer: absolutely nothing.

You have come up short once again Rasheed. This is the second round of the playoffs, not even the Conference Finals. Save your predictions for that round, or even better, the NBA Finals. A second round prediction, especially when your team is up 2-1 games, means absolutely nothing to me.

Finally, make sure you come through with solid play in the game you made a prediction about. There is nothing more embarrassing than predicting a victory and then having a less than stellar performance. Ask Seahawks TE Jeremy Stevens, he’ll tell you.

Would you believe it that Rasheed falls short once again? I would hardly call 7 points and 3 turnovers a stellar performance. Simply said, Wallace talked the talk but did not walk the walk in Game Four.

So let’s sum up what we have learned today. The Pistons are heavy favorites to win this series, Wallace’s prediction did not come true during an all-important game, and Rasheed had a pretty poor performance in Game Four. To add further insult to injury, the Pistons actually lost the game. Rasheed’s predictions have come to mean absolutely nothing and these types of player predictions have become a real problem. If you can think all the way back to the first round of the playoffs, Ron Artest made a similar bogus prediction, but for different reasons. He predicted the Kings would win the championship; only the Kings were the eighth seed and no one took them seriously. Especially after they lost in round one to the Spurs. Some other athletes actually make predictions just to pump themselves up. A classic example is Joey Porter, the linebacker from the Pittsburg Steelers. Before the 2006 Super Bowl, Porter made all kinds of predictions for the sole purpose of giving his team reasons to win the game. If these predictions and trash talking are the only way to get pumped up for the SuperBowl, you have a serious problem.

I am going to close with one important message to all athletes such as these. Leave the prediction making to the experts and the media. We, like you, might not know what we are talking about, but at least we get paid for it. All your bogus predictions about games that aren’t very significant are just diluting your importance and turning you into a circus act. The next time I hear a player prediction, I’ll know it’s more valuable as entertainment than actual information.

Beginning Golf Instruction tips: Getting a feel for the approach shot

After mastering the concept of the tee shot, the next step as a golf instruction beginner is to move on to the short game and what are known as approach shots. For most people, these shots will be increasingly more difficult because they require more skill & patience than a simple tee shot.

There are a variety of approach shots, all of which are used in different situations depending on where your initial shot lands on the course. However, your intention with these shots is always to land on the green.

The pitch shot is an approach shot that is played from farther away than the other shots. Using a wedge, the ideal pitch shot is the perfect combination of enough swing momentum to carry your shot through, but not enough to send it sailing over the green. Trajectory will be low to average depending on how far you are from the cup and you want to make sure the ball doesn't roll too far.

You must start off with a slightly open stance, positioning your right foot directly across from the ball. When following through on a pitch shot, always make sure to keep your backswing as short as you possibly can. Failure to keep your backswing in check will usually cause you to instinctively put the brakes on your shot while accelerating, which is a definite no-no. You want to have enough confidence in your wedge to let the club do the work for you: don't think you have to assist the ball through the air.

Another approach shot is known as the chip shot. You'll need to use a chip shot once you're within about 30 yards from the green, usually after a fairway drive or tee shot. The idea is for this shot to have a much shorter trajectory, so you will need to use a less lofted club. Proper weight distribution is paramount to getting off a decent chip shot. If you're a right handed golfer, you want to put the majority of your weight on the left side and hold this position through the duration of your shot.

There are generally two kinds of chip shots that we want to concern ourselves with. The first one is what's known as the bump-and-run shot, and the second is a flop shot. The Bump And Run is usually taken with an 8, 7 or 6 iron club and with the clubface hooded. That way your shot will have have less loft. You also want to have just enough power in your backswing to follow through. The flop shot is used when you want to get over an obstacle like a rough patch or a sand trap, so you're going to want to have a much higher trajectory in order to push the ball over. Open up your stance and follow through as far under the ball as possible to try and pop it up, and you'll keep your ball away from the danger zones with a good position for a subsequent shot.

Stock Investing-The Real Deal On Options Back Dating And What It Means For Stock Investing

Just when you thought it was safe to write a check for stock investing, the options backdating scandal hits. Our problem as money managers is that much of the information that has been disseminated about options back dating, and stock investing is just pure WRONG. The purpose of this article is to clear the air, and inform you as some one in need of stock market information just what you need to know about this scandal.

Let’s begin. CEO’s and senior management at any company whether it’s Steve Jobs at Apple, or over 100 other companies in question receive their executive compensation in two forms. The first form is an outright salary grant. Let’s say $5 million per year. No one is challenging that there have been any games with this part of the compensation package.

The second form of payment is stock options of which there are many types. We are going to use the most common form of stock options which is a straight options grant. Let’s create an example. Let’s say John Smith is CEO of ABC Computer and he was given options on 1,000,000 shares of ABC Computer this afternoon which is January 22, 2007 at $10 per share which is the selling price of the stock on the open market.

Now let’s say back on December 15, 2006 the stock was trading at $5 per share. The compensation committee at the corporation in question wants to do the CEO John Smith a favor. They BACKDATE the options agreement to December 15, 2006, when the stock was selling at $5 per share. The date of the options agreement is called the GRANT DATE. You need to remember this term.

Under the IRS Code, an executive must hold the option for 2 years. It is now 2 years and one day later. Let’s make it December 16, 2008, and the stock is selling for $15 per share. John Smith the executive exercises his options and sells 1,000,000 shares at $15 per share on the open market. Because of options backdating, he is showing a grant price of $5 per share, on December 15, 2006. His profit is $10,000,000.

You get the profit by selling one million shares at $15 per share, with a cost price of $5 per share. It’s a $10 per share profit on one million shares, or $10 million profit. If the company had used the correct date of January 22, 2007, the grant price would have been $10 per share, and the selling price would have remained the same at $15 per share. The profit would have been $5 million dollars or half the profit that was made by BACKDATING.

Of course, John Smith CEO would have had to wait until it was two years past the real grant date of January 22, 2007 to sell his stock in order to meet the IRS requirements. We now see that because of options backdating, this CEO executive John Smith made $10 million exercising his options as opposed to $5 million. There are several more things you need to know in order to understand what’s at work here.

• What is the nature of the compensation when the options are being exercised? Is it ordinary income, or capital gain?
The answer is that the sale of the options after two years from the grant date is ordinary income. Mr. Smith in this case has $10 million in ordinary income on top of what he is paid in compensation by ABC Corporation.

• Is the IRS being defrauded by options backdating?
The answer is no, the $10 million is being declared as income and is includible in income. The IRS is not being defrauded by OPTIONS BACKDATING, although the media would have you believe this is the case. If anything, the IRS is getting more taxes than it is entitled to because the compensation declared is $10 million. If the correct grant date were used the compensation would have been $5 million as we talked about above.

• Is anybody getting defrauded?
You bet, the shareholders of the company are being defrauded by whoever is granting the options, and the recipient of the options if he or she DIRECTLY knew about the backdating. In this case, the fraud amounts to $5 million of excess compensation paid because of the backdating. You get that number by figuring out what the compensation would have been if the correct GRANT DATE were used, as opposed to an erroneous earlier date, or backdating.

• Is there any way that an executive can make his gain a CAPITAL GAIN and pay the Capital Gains rate on the transaction?
Yes, but it involves the executive in question declaring the value of the option on the grant date, and paying ordinary income taxes on the grant date to the government. This is a section 83b election under the IRS code. The executive then can convert his gain to a capital gain on the date of sale 2 years later. This basically only happens if the stock is very cheap, pennies per share on the grant date. During the Internet go-go years, executives who elected this option got huge tax bills that they could not pay because stocks went from pennies a share to hundreds of dollars per share, and then collapsed before they could sell them, leaving the executive with a huge tax liability.

Another thing an executive can do is exercise his option on the exercise date 2 years later and then NOT SELL, but hold on. He will begin a capital gain holding period on the exercise date 2 years later. Keep in mind that this means the executive is now at risk.

Conclusion

The options backdating scandal has resulted in the shareholders of the companies in question being defrauded by the amount of excess compensation that was earned by the executive granted the option. The IRS was never defrauded by the company. In fact the IRS benefited in the excess compensation paid the executive by receiving additional taxes from the executive.

Options backdating should not be tolerated by any Board of Directors of a company, and certainly not by the shareholder base. To the extent that it is, the Directors are violating the rules of corporate governance that they have a fiduciary responsibility to uphold.

30 Seconds to Easy Self Hypnosis

There are many ways in which to induce a tranquil, relaxed state of mind, in which the body is still, and the conscious mind is simply placed aside for a while as the subconscious mind assumes a more dominant role, and allows the therapeutic cognitive processes which are innate in all of us to become active.

This state of mind, known as the hypnotic state is very simply created by;
- Focusing one’s attention.
- Relaxing the body.
- Allowing unnecessary thoughts to enter, then exit, without any rationalisation.

This process can be easily accomplished by the technique that follows. It is known as the “Eye Roll Technique’, and is a very old but powerful way of entering a safe therapeutic hypnotic trance. When in this relaxed state of mind, it is possible to offer oneself any positive suggestions or affirmations in order to bring about the changes which you desire. Examples of positive statements and affirmations are given further on.

THE TECHNIQUE.
If possible, find yourself a quiet place and either sit down or lie down comfortably.
Roll up your eyes, just as if you were trying to look at your eyebrows.
Allow your eyelids to slowly close, and as you do so, take in a deep breath and hold it.

As you slowly exhale, allow your upturned eyes to return to their normal position.

As you finish exhaling, enjoy that gentle, floating sensation that you will experience.
At the same time, imagine your right hand to be very light, like it has a childs helium balloon tied to it making it rise gently. You may be surprised at the ease by which your hand and arm seem to float up by themselves.
This floating hand signal is a signal from your subconscious mind that you are entering a state of deep relaxation.

As you remain in this deeply relaxed, hypnotic state of mind, offer yourself any positive, therapeutic suggestions which you feel will help to bring about the changes you really want or need.
Remain in this state for 10-20 minutes, that’s really all that’s needed.

You can repeat the process as many times a day as you like.

EXITING THE TRANCE STATE.
Roll up your eyes behind your closed eyelids.
Very slowly, allow your eyelids to open, and the eyes to focus.
Make a tight fist with your right hand, and as you do, allow this light floating hand to drift down into a comfortable position. As it comes to rest, release the tight fist and gently stretch those fingers.……FINISHED !!!!

If necessary, the exit from the trance state can be accomplished any time by going through the steps listed above.

It may take you a little time to perfect the technique, especially if you are the ‘on the go all the time’ sort of person. Relaxation comes easier to some people than to others, so always bear this in mind.

Remember, if you want to make positive changes in your life, this relatively short use of your time can pay great dividends in the end. The beauty of it is that once you have practiced and mastered the technique, you will be able to enter the relaxed state much more easily and deeply.

Another point to remember is that everyone is capable of entering into a hypnotic state.
